Geometry Dash
I forgot how I first stumbled upon this game. What I do know, is that it has been my jam for 4 years now! Maybe it was a random advertisement. Maybe it was recommended by a friend. Nonetheless, this game has been stuck in my heart for a very long time, and that is why I am reviewing it! One of my favorite games of all time, and the game that will probably stick with me until death (when will RobTop release 2.2 please I'm so hyped RELEASE IT).
Once again, I shall be criticizing the game on the 5 categories: Gameplay, Story, Graphics, Cost, and Originality.
Once again, I shall be criticizing the game on the 5 categories: Gameplay, Story, Graphics, Cost, and Originality.
Gameplay
I'll try to explain the game in a nutshell: You are a cube, who is trying to move to the end of the level you are playing without dying. You are moving at a constant speed and must jump over obstacles in your way. One hit and you're dead, then you have to restart the level from the top. There are no checkpoints in the game, making for a fun, challenging, and sometimes rage inducing game. The gameplay is actually really simple. You only have one control in the game (two if you count the pause button), and that is to tap the screen. This will make the cube jump. However, portals & orbs can change everything up to spice the gameplay a bit. They can switch gravity, shrink/enlarge you, cause you to think you're going backwards, and even split your player into two or change it's form! There are seven forms in the game currently, and each behave in a certain style. The game is highly customizable and unpredictable, so that's more rage-inducing juice for ya.9.5/10
Story
What story? I don't see a story (not sarcasm)! Disclaimer: Some levels have stories.N/A rating
Graphics
Simple and colorful graphics, yet so beatiful. The first levels were pretty ugly, but as the game got updated, the kind developer RobTop Games added more styles and visuals to the game, as well as more players to unlock, which meant more possibilities for level creators and players alike. Heck, some talented creators have spent loads of freetime into their levels, and they show so much effort it's ridiculous. If you want a dose of fresh visual greatness, it's best to look into the later levels (though you might need some skill first). Play for a good time, and you'll get yourself some fun looking characters to equip!8.5/10
Cost
For a simple game with one control, the price is very fitting. It only costs 2$ on mobile and 4$ on steam. There's also a demo out there for players who want to try out the "difficult" game. When you do purchase the premium game, you get the lifetime access to the whole world of billions of community levels in Geometry Dash. Because the game itself and the community keeps growing, more and more amazing levels will keep spawning. Needless to say, you're in for a fun ride.10/10
Originality
The runner genre of games was slightly popular among game devlopers especially in the early 2010's, with the release of Jetpack Joyride, Temple Runner, and Subway Surfers. However, it wasn't that popular compared to other genres such as FPS's or RPG's. This game is unique as a runner game, because it brings in an extra level of rage by introducing the "one-strike and you're out" feature, which is what made it so popular. Like all runner games, you're moving at a constant speed, but difficulty can increase depending on obstacle placement. This placement is scripted rather than random, which is essential for players to master them. If it were random, the game would definitely have worse gameplay quality than it does now. Overall, it was a new fun addtion to the world of runners, though it did retain many elements of runners. Plus 50% of all GD players are youngsters who don't bother to get better at the game.7.5/10
